The Waste Authority Limited was fortunate to receive 5 different waste Management Trucks from the Japanese Government, this morning.
The assistance worth more than USD$107,000 or equivalent to TOP$200,000
The donation includes 3 waste collection trucks, 1 Dump truck and a septic truck.
The Japanese Ambassador – H.E Tetsuya Ishi in his remark during the program says, this is part of their support towards strengthening waste management throughout Tonga.
“Japan is an active contributor to the capacity building of waste management throughout the world. Our government takes an international lead around the world in the R initiative, Reuse, reduce and recycle. Since 2004 which was initiated after the HG summit and recently the Shishma Summit in building and sustainable economic growth. Not just locally but also internationally.”
The Minister of Health Hon Saia Piukala thanked the ambassador and his government for the kind assistance.
“This assistance enables us to establish reliable waste management service for Tonga and makes a major contribution in keeping tonga clean and green. Although waste authority limited has successfully introduced effective waste management in Tongatapu, the outer islands have yet to experience the same advantage. However we’re now seeing progress in this area and waste authority limited and JICA are working together. As a result the waste collection will be extended to Vava’u around January next year.”
Attending the program were representatives from related Government Ministries, NGOs and many guests.
