Tonga Power Limited has announced that the new electricity tariff that was expected to be effective on February 1st has been put on hold.
This was confirmed to Radio and Television Tonga News by the Acting Manager and Treasurer of the company, Steven ‘Esau.
He says, the Minister of Public Enterprises, Saia Piukala, requested to hold the increase in the electricity tariff.
‘Esau says the Chairman of Tonga Power Limited and the Management have all agreed to hold the increase.
He says the increase in electricity tariff is largely attributed to the under recover fuel cost of around $1.4 million pa’anga from November to December last year.
This was after the price of the fuel was increased from 1.1784 per litre to 1.3575 in December.
He says the plan is to increase the electricity tariff by 3.94 seniti per unit but that has been put on hold.
‘Esau says they also take into consideration that schools are about to start and the increase will put more burdens on the parents.
