The CEO of the Ministry of Labour strongly believes that Tonga is not ready to ratify the PACER PLUS Agreement.
Edgar Cocker says there are other issues that needs clarification before Tonga ratify it.
He adds, Tonga did not have the capabilities to ratify PACER PLUS and a group of lawyers will visit Tonga to examine legal procedures.
Cocker adds the situation should not hinder the trade sector in areas of exporting local produce.
He says if Tonga ratifies the agreement, there’s a chance that the small local businesses can prosper or else it will face negative impacts.
He suggests that countries such as Kiribati, Samoa, Cook Islands, Niue and Tuvalu should hold meeting with Tonga to review the agreement in order to be able to compete in the market.
The PACER PLUS agreement was signed in Tonga last year.
