Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 14/02/2018

Up to 80% of Tonga Power’s utility poles and lines in the Nuku’alofa area were damaged during Cyclone Gita’s devastation on Monday evening.

The Operation Manager of Tonga Power Limited – Setitaia Chen says they are identifying the areas that urgently need electricity for their daily operations such as the Prime Minister’s Office, Palace Office , NEMO and Radio Tonga.

Tonga Power was able to turn on the electricity line for the main water supply system at Mata ki ‘Eua as well as Vaiola Hospital.

Chen says, not much damage were reported from the outer villages  due to  the effectiveness of the village upgrade projects already in place.

Seti is cautioning  the public to stay alert and to be more cautious and treat all lines though hanging from poles or from the air, live.

He adds, that the nearby areas close to Tonga Power’s Generator at ‘Anana such as Popua and Ma’ufanga will most likely get their electricity power on, this week while the rest of the villages will be turned on next or the following week.
