It is vital to ensure that the needs of women and girls are prioritized during the recovery period from Cyclone Gita.
This is the purpose of assistance from the United Nation Population Fund – UNFPA to victims of Gita especially women and girls.
Speaking to Radio Tonga News – Tomoko Kurokawa the Deputy Representative of UNFPA to the region said, their focus is to support the Ministry of Health to ensure that women’s sexual and reproductive health are addressed.
“During natural disasters often women and girls are the most affected and often 75% of the displaced population are comprised of women, girls and children. So it’s very important to acknowledge that they have certain needs that may not be met with basic hygiene kids,” Kurokawa said.
A workshop will be conducted on Saturday with related stakeholders about these kits.
