Customs Division concerned about possible abuse of tax exemption
Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 13/03/2018
The Customs Division is concerned that some families may abuse the opportunity to exempt the tax and duty for all cargo and shipments sent from abroad.
Head of Customs Division – Kelemete Vahe says the exemption of tax and duty is intended to assist the families while recovering from Cyclone Gita in making it easier for their relatives abroad to send them aid supplies.
However, Vahe believes some families may use this opportunity to import items for commercial purposes.
He therefore urged the public not to misuse this opportunity but to use it wisely to get the items to help them get back on their feet following the damage from the cyclone.
This tax exemption lasts for 6 months.
