Soft closing ceremony of Tonga’s Parliament was held this morning

A soft closing ceremony of Tonga’s  Legislative Assembly was held at 10.30 this morning by a Commission of three Nobles comprising of Lord Vaea, Lord Tu’iha’ateiho and Lord Luani.

In the address from the throne presented by Lord Vaea, His Majesty King Tupou VI thanked the God Almighty for his guidance and providence which had enabled us to reach out to everyone after TC Gita left a trail of devastation.


The destruction of the Legislative Assembly by the Cyclone has led to the relocation to the Tonga National Centre compound.


His Majesty, King Tupou VI praised the National Emergency Management Office NEMO, Government Ministries, Private Sector and other stake holders for the pleasing achievements in assisting families in the wake of TC Gita, for immediate response and continued recovery activities leading to the rebuilding period.


King Tupou VI expressed his desire to see that these close collaborations will continue to help recover those who were worst affected.


The King called on the public for swifter cooperation to support government Ministries especially in Agriculture to secure food, the Ministry of Education in maintaining high quality international standards and the Ministry of Health for the best interest of the people.


He also praised the fact the no lives were lost during the cyclone but many lives were unfortunately taken by other means such as traffic accidents, alcohol and drug abuse.


King Tupou VI called on the public to cooperate and try to solve these social and other problems.


The now closed sitting of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga was opened in a soft ceremony on January, 11th 2018.


The Soft Closing ceremony this morning was the first to be held at the Legislative Assembly’s temporary location at Tonga National Centre in Tofoa.
