Vital to empower women in the rural area

 Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 20/03/2018

It is vital to address “Challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and to empower rural women and girls”.

That is the theme highlighted during the 62nd annual commission on the status of women from the 12th to the 23rd of March in New York.

The Director of Women and Children Crisis Centre – ‘Ofa Likiliki says  this year’s theme is the perfect opportunity to highlight the experiences of women and girls that they are hearing about as they provide psychosocial support across rural areas of Tongatapu and ‘Eua in the aftermath of Cyclone Gita.

Likiliki said, most often women and girls living in rural areas are never heard and their stories are never told.

Therefore they want to change this by giving them various media platforms to raise their voices.

WCCC launched its first story yesterday.

The media campaign initiative is supported by UN Women Fiji Multi-Country Office, in conjunction with Australian Aid-funded WCCC psychosocial support work to affected areas.
