Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 09/04/2018
Today, April 9th marks the completion of the renewal of the State of Emergency for Tongatapu and ‘Eua in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Gita.
The first State of Emergency was declared on February 12th, the day TC Gita made landfall in Tongatapu and ‘Eua.
The declaration was practiced as it was necessary for emergency powers to be exercised in order to prevent or minimize the loss of human life, illness or injury, property loss and damage to the environment.
Radio Tonga still awaits for the Government officials for more information regarding the matter.
However, local businesses were concerned about the extension of the State of Emergency because it has an impact on their income.
The curfew imposed at the Nuku’alofa CBD has been extended for another week starting at 11pm until 5am.
The curfew was put in place to protect the people and their properties in the wake of TC Gita.
