Immunization Week marks in Vava’u

Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 27/04/2018

Representatives from the Ministry of Health are visiting Vava’u this week, to mark Immunization Week, with various programs on the island.

Afu Tei from the Public Health Division, who is part of the team in Vava’u, says their programs to mark this week include awareness programs at schools and villages, as well as training with the nurses in Vava’u on vaccination.

Vaccination is important as it protects children from serious illness and complications of vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, mumps, and whooping cough.

Tei says the childhood vaccination rate in Tonga is at a satisfactory standard despite a few challenges they face.

This year’s theme for immunization week is, “Protected Together, Vaccines work”.
