Cooperation between an Australian hospital and the Health Ministry has been extended.

The Twinning Programme Agreement between St John of God Hospital from Australia and the Ministry of Health, was this morning extended for another two years.

The program – funded by the Australian government – has been running for 26 years now in which staff from Vaiola Hospital are sent to St John of God Hospital to work for a month, gaining experience which would benefit the Vaiola Hospital.

St John of God also sends staff to work in Tonga for a month assisting the Vaiola Hospital staff.

The Program Coordinator – Simaima Filiai says they are looking forward to the next two years of cooperation with the St John of God Hospital, developing the Vaiola Hospital to better deliver their services to the people of Tonga.

The CEO of St John of God hospital – Alex Demidov says this has been a successful program for both hospitals over the past 26 years.

“Information sharing, best practice, and care for the respective communities both here in Tonga and in Ballarat, Australia. We’ve been learning together for a long time we hope that will continue into the future for a very long time and I think it’s a very mutually beneficial arrangement.”

The Director of Health – Dr. Siale ‘Akauola, signed the contract this morning on behalf of the Ministry of Health, while Demidov signed on behalf of the St John of God hospital.
