Maintenance work towards the airport in Ha’apai is around $2 million pa’anga

Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 03/05/2018

The maintenance work for the landing surface or runway at the airport in Ha’apai is worth $2 million pa’anga.

The CEO of Tonga Airport Limited – Viliami Ma’ake says the working process is under the Ministry of Infrastructure funded by World Bank.

He says the Salote Pilolevu Airport was designed for specific and smaller aircraft.

However, the runway was partially damaged because bigger planes are now landing at the airport.

Minor maintenance work is carried out everyday due to concerns from the airlines saying that the surface is very stony.

CEO of Real Tonga says, he has raised the issue with the Civil Aviation of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Tonga Airport to fix the problem because it will have a negative impact on their planes.

Tevita Palu says, the issue needs to be addressed as soon as possible in order to continue their services to serve the public.
