PM nominates Losaline Ma’asi to become the Minister for Internal Affairs
Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 08/05/2018
Prime Minister ‘Akilisi Pohiva has nominated Tongatapu constituency 5 MP Losaline Ma’asi to become the new Minister for Internal Affairs.
The recommendation was made despite the fact that the government is yet to receive any response from His Majesty about Pohiva’s previous recommendation to revoke the appointment of ‘Akosita Lavulavu as Minister for Internal Affairs.
However, In clause 51 section (3) a of Tonga’s Constitution it says, A Minister shall retain his position as Minister until – his appointment is revoked by the King on the recommendation of the Prime Minister or in accordance with clause 50B.
During this morning Press Conference, Pohiva says he is yet to receive the King’s approval for Lord Ma’afu resignation and his recommendation to appoint Rev. Dr. Mohenoa Puloka as the Governor of Ha’apai.
He adds, the Cabinet has approved yesterday to provide financial assistance to schools in Tonga that were badly damaged from Cyclone Gita.
Pohiva says, complaints made against the reconstruction phase are understandable but most of the donations made after the cyclone were for emergency response effort.
He says, the World Bank has confirmed its financial assistance to help to the Kingdom in the reconstruction phase but they are on the process of completing all the requirements.
The PM says, these requirements are expected to be completed by October.
Meanwhile, the amount to be donated to each school is still unknown.
One of the issues raised during the press conference was social media because it has been used to defame the Royal Family, Nobles, government leaders and the public.
