A Tongan surgeon, Lord Tangi of Vaonukunuka, has received the International Medal Award in recognition of his enduring hard work and dedication to his profession, his people in Tonga and the Pacific.
The International Medal Award 2018 was from the Royal Australasian College for Surgeons based in Melbourne, Australia.
Lord Tangi of Vaonukunuka has been a fellow of this College since 1983.
He says, he’s honored to receive this award because it shows that they’re recognizing the work that he is doing in the Kingdom and in the Pacific.
Out of all the doctors currently working in Tonga, Lord Tangi is the only fellow of the Royal Australasian College for surgeons.
He says, few Tongan surgeons are fellows of this college but they are not working in the kingdom.
In order to become a fellow of the Royal Australasian College for Surgeons, doctors have to go through proper training and tests to become one.
Tangi says, only few doctors from the Pacific region are members or otherwise known as fellows of this college.
More than 2000 fellows attended the annul meeting where this award was presented.
Lord Tangi of Vaonukonuka has been working as a surgeon for the Ministry of Health in Tonga for many years. He is a former Minister of Health and former deputy Prime Minister.
