In celebration of International Nurses Day – tomorrow May 12th, the Tongan nurses held a special program today at Vaiola Hospital.

This year’s International Nurses Day theme is – Nurses: A voice to lead. Health is a Human Right.

The NCD nursing supervisor – Sr Seilini Soakai says this special day encourages them to carry out their nursing duties with diligence, despite facing challenges in their work, because everyone has a right to good health.

Soakai says there are many challenges that nurses face here in Tonga, especially in the outer islands and their mission to ensure all Tongans are given a chance for a healthy life.

International Nurses Day marks the date of birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, and in ode to the pioneer, many of the nurses at this mornings program were dressed in Florence Nightingale inspired outfits.

The Health Director – Dr Siale ‘Akauola was guest of honor at the program, which was also attended by the WHO representative Dr Yutaro Setoya, as well as retired nurses.
