The Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forestry and Fisheries yesterday received a donation of 4 plough tractors and 50 chainsaws from Guangdong Province, China.
This assistance was presented by the Chinese Ambassador to Tonga – H.E Wang Baodong, and accepted by the Minister for Agriculture – Semisi Fakahau.
Baodong said the agriculture sector is crucial to Tonga’s economy and with the devastation caused by Cyclone Gita in this sector, they have donated these equipment to assist the ministry in the recovery of the agriculture sector.
“We know agriculture is one of the major economic pillars. The vast majority of the Tongan people lived on agricultural related sectors, so we know the urgent need of the local people so we are always happy to help,” he said.
Meanwhile, Fakahau expressed the ministry’s appreciation of this assistance, saying the plough tractors and the chainsaws will accelerate the ministry’s work in trying to clear the trees which were uprooted from the cyclone. He also mentioned there would be further donations from China in the near future.
CEO of the Ministry of Agriculture Dr. Viliami Manu says the primary concern of the ministry now is clearing the plantations for agriculture.
