Pacific Media encouraged to fulfill their watchdog role

Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa,7/06/2018

A veteran journalist from the US has emphasized the importance to train media personnel in the Pacific and around the world to be able to fulfill their watchdog role in the society.

Mark Horvit, an associate professor at the University of Missouri School of Journalism made the comment, during the Regional Investigative Journalism and Political Reporting Workshop for journalists hosted in Fiji.

Mark Horvit says watchdog role is vitally important because media is the only organisation that does that independent of government.

He says one of the roles of media in the society is to serve as a watchdog and to make sure that those in power are doing what they are supposed to be doing and looking after the interest of the public and to ensure that public funds are spent correctly.

Linda Filiai from Tonga Broadcasting Commission is participating at the one week workshop.
