Tonga to establish office in Brussels

Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa,8/06/2018

The establishment of a Tongan diplomatic office in Brussels is currently being considered by the Ministry of Labour, to open up more opportunities for financial aid from European countries.

Brussels is considered the de facto capital of the European Union, having a long history of hosting the institutions of the European Union within its European Quarter.

Labour CEO – Edgar Cocker says establishing an embassy in Brussels, will allow Tonga a slice of the cake which other Pacific Islands such as Fiji, Samoa, and Papua New Guinea are benefiting from, with their offices in Brussels.

In addition to establishing the diplomatic office, Tonga would also need to register for and ratify the Economic Partnership Agreement with the European countries.

Cocker says projects in Climate Change would greatly be improved through these ties as well as development programs assisting the underprivileged in the community.
