Government handed out cheques for families whose houses were affected from Cyclone Gita

A total of 6996 families in Tongatapu and ‘Eua will be fortunate to receive either financial assistance or building materials from the government to help rebuild their homes after the devastation from Cyclone Gita

The cheques distribution started this morning in different villages in Tongatapu and it’s expected to reach out to the island of ‘Eua soon.

Six thousand 739 families chose to receive financial assistance while 257 families will be receiving building materials.

In a radio program, the Hon Minister of Finance Dr Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa says TOP$25 million pa’anga were donated by foreign donors and most of it goes towards the works carried out by different clusters.

Meanwhile, a total of TOP$4.8 million pa’anga was allocated to help rebuild homes that were affected from the cyclone and it was categorized into three groups.

Tu’i’onetoa says homes with minor damaged will receive TOP$500 pa’anga; homes with major damaged will be receiving TOP$1500 pa’anga while houses that were completely destroyed will receive TOP$3000.

The financial distribution was based on they survey carried out by Statistic Department.

More than 4 thousand cheques are ready to be distributed while some are still processing.

The Minister of Finance says only TOP$4.8 million pa’anga was allocated to help families rebuild their homes but upon completion of this work, they are expected to spend TOP$5.9 million pa’anga.
