A regional workshop is currently underway in Nuku’alofa hosted by the Attorney General’s Office with the aim to empower communities to work together to deter, detect and prosecute online child abuse and cyber-bullying. This 4-day workshop is in partnership with the Government of Australia and the Council of Europe Global Action against Cybercrime – Glacy+ project.
A crown counsel from the Attorney General’s Office – Leotrina Macomber says internet is a great tool for interaction yet there can be some disadvantages.
She also says they are hoping that by the end of this workshop, the participants will have a fair idea on how to deal with the youths in regards to social media platforms.
Macomber says that the main objective of this workship is to ensure that participants have a practical and multi-disciplinary approach which focuses on working together to combat online child abuse in the Pacific.
One of the benefits that Tonga has is the CERT program which was established to be the first program in the region to tackle the challenges regarding online child abuse.
The workshop will wrap up on Friday
