The repair works towards the two Niuas trimaran ‘Utuma’atu have reached 80 percent of completion

The Managing Director of the Ongo Niua Community Company Dr Sitiveni Halapua says the repair work is expected to be completed soon and the ‘Utuma’atu will provide shipping services to the Two Niuas and Tafahi.

He says representatives from company that built the trimaran in NZ were in Tongatapu before to repair the major damaged to ‘Utuma’atu and this week they are currently in Tongatapu to complete the work.

Dr Halapua says, they are hoping that by the end of next month, the boat will be ready to operate and provide services to the two Niuas.

He adds with the operation of the ‘Utuma’atu, training opportunities will be available for locals on how to manage the trimaran.

The Managing Director of the Ongo Niua Community Company says the two most important things with ‘Utuma’atu, first one is to provide regular service to the two Niuas and secondly to provide training service for young people in Tonga especially in sails.

H says this will give them opportunities locally and in overseas countries.

The repair works for the ‘Utuma’atu is worth more than $170 000 pa’anga funded by the Halapua Family Trust and in the meantime negotiations with relevant stakeholders in regards to the damaged are still ongoing.
