Consumer Price Index for May 2018 increase by 0.1 per cent

The Statistics Department recorded an increase of 0.1 per cent in the Consumer Price Index for the month of May, from the previous month.

The local index recorded a decrease of 0.1 per cent while import index increased by 0.3 per cent

In the previous two months, April recorded an increase of 0.4 per cent and 6.6 per cent increase in March.

The Food Group recorded a decrease of 0.3 per cent towards the index position of May 2018.

This was mainly due to decrease in price of some local fruits and vegetables.

The prices of some meat, fish and poultry items also decreased throughout the month.

Due to increase in the price of concrete block, the Housing Group recorded an increase of 0.4 per cent, compared to the month of April.

Items in the Household Operations and Clothing & Footwear groups recorded no change in comparison to the previous month.

The Transportation group index recorded an increase of 0.9 per cent due to an increase in price of diesel and petrol, Tobacco, Alcohol and Kava Tonga increased by 1.4 per cent due to an increase in the price of Kava Tonga and cigarettes, while Miscellaneous goods and Services recorded an increase of 0.1 per cent, all in comparison to April.

The annual rate of inflation for May 2018 was 9.4 per cent compared to 9.6 per cent in the previous month.

The annual inflation for the same month of the previous year, May 2017, was 10.3 per cent.

Local Index marked an increase of 12.7 per cent and Imported Index increased by 6.8 per cent in May 2018.
