New Zealand donated 10 containers of school furniture to the Ministry of Education

Ten containers of school furniture worth more than NZD $100,000 was handed over this morning from New Zealand to the Ministry of Education to assist students after cyclone Gita.
New Zealand High Commissioner to Tonga H.E Tiffany Babington handed over the donation to the CEO of the Ministry of Education Claude Tupou.
She says the donation is part of the New Zealand government’s effort to assist Tonga recover post cyclone Gita.
“Hopefully the support will help schools that suffer damage during cyclone Gita to better function and ensure that school children are better equipped to continue education. The ten containers of furniture that have arrived in Tonga include desk, desk chairs for Primary and Secondary schools and school tables. The New Zealand Ministry of Education organised the collection of this school furniture from schools across New Zealand including some of the schools that they had experience disaster themselves including the schools in Christchurch,” she said.
These school materials will be distributed to Government and Non Government schools at both Primary School and Secondary School level.
Meanwhile, ‘Isikeli Oko from the Ministry of Education assured that the items donated would help cyclone affected students in Tongatapu and ‘Eua.
“This kind donation surely will help to quicken the recovery in education. From our schools damage assessment after the cyclone, we had identified that some school are so desperate to have some of these furniture, the library books as well as office equipment and this donation can meet this need,” he said.
Meanwhile, the CEO for Education Claude Tupou thanked New Zealand for their continuous support to the Education sector in Tonga and today’s donation highlights the good relationship between Tonga and New Zealand.
He also emphasized the importance to look after these school furniture.
One of the schools that will be benefit from this assistance is ‘Apifo’ou Collage and they were at the hand over ceremony this morning.
The principal of the school Father ‘Ofa Vaihu, says the struggle at the College is real but they are thankful for this generous donation.
These school furniture are expected to be distributed to the affected schools this week.
