Roles of mothers encouraged to minimize social challenges

Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa ,27/07/2018

A tapa making woman from Lapaha has urged mothers in Tonga to ensure their motherly roles at home are fulfilled.

49 year old Mele’ana Tavake strongly believes that if the mother’s role is carried out accordingly, it will have a great impact on the lives of young adults in Tonga.

It will help minimize the social challenges in community especially the illegal distribution and possession of illicit drugs.

She believes, some men and young adults involved in the illegal distribution of drugs are to gain more income for the families.

Tavake says instead of men involving in criminal activities women should be part of the development group to make use of their time like making tapas.

For example, the village of Lapaha has established a women’s tapa making group known as the Tongiaki Melie ‘a Fafine Lapaha with 101 members and as a group they can make ten thousand pa’anga in a day.

The members include young teenage girls and one elderly woman in her 80s.
