Illegal harvesting of sandalwood recorded in Ha’apai

Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa ,1/08/2018

The Ministry of Agriculture is urging the people of Ha’apai to stop the illegal harvesting of sandalwood for commercial purposes because the Ministry is yet to allow anyone to export it overseas.

The concern was raised following reports of illegal harvesting of sandalwood in Ha’apai to be exported for commercial purposes.

Another concern was also raised because some of the sandalwood trees are not yet matured and some have been stolen from people’s homes.

The approximate value of sandalwood in the international market is more than $100 pa’anga per kilo.

The sandalwood from Tonga is very popular to overseas market mainly for perfume production.
