Head of the Customs Division – Kelemete Vahe says, the initiative is to reduce the number of smokers in Tonga due its negative impacts on people’s lives.

Related stakeholders strongly pushed for the initiative which was aimed to build a healthier environment for all.

Since the Government imposed heavy tax on tobacco, the number of smokers in Tonga is slowly decreasing.

Meantime, Vahe adds, a new tax will be imposed this month on imported corned beef and sausages with the aim to reduce the consumption of the unhealthier products.
