There’s hope for a better services and collaboration for Tonga’s Emergency department in Vaiola, after the 76th conference of the Tonga Medical Association which was started this morning.
The 3 day meeting is attended by representatives from eight Pacific Island Countries including NZ and Australia.
The theme of this year’s meeting is Emergency Medicine: Past, Present and future.
The Head of the Emergency Medicine Department – Dr. Viliami Vao, in his welcoming speech says, this year’s conference is unique because in 20 years of serving the department – this is the first ever emergency theme for the Tonga Medical Association Conference.
The Tonga Emergency department though still in its infancy has managed to walk along the stepping stones of a difficult and challenging journey. Milestones has been attained in terms of staffing, services, training and infrastructure, most notably the much anticipated completion and utilization of a brand new building in early 2012. I would like especially to acknowledge these participants. You re contribution towards developing our small and department has surpassed all forms of capacity building this department has gratefully received.
The Guest of Honor at the Program was Acting High Commissioner of NZ to Tonga – H.E Elena Procuta.
This morning’s program included a minute silence in honor of one of Tonga Medical Association’s pioneer and former Minister of Health – Dr. Sione Tapa who passed away few months ago.
Attended this morning’s program was the Minister of Health – Saia Piukala, Lord Tangi of Vaonukonuka, members of Tonga Medical Association among others.
