Rotary club of Nuku’alofa joins the world in marking Polio Day

The Rotary Club of Nuku`alofa (RCN), is joining Rotary Clubs around 122 countries in the world in the “end polio now campaign”.
For 2018 campaign, the RCN is emphasizing the importance of a free polio country and what activities in place with the Ministry of Health to protect the people of Tonga.
A press release from the RCN stated, the last and only epidemic in Tonga was in 1958.
The last documented case of polio in Tonga was 1982 and Tonga’s immunization coverage has been consistently high around 99% for considerable period now.
Polio is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world.
Its symptoms includes headache, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, stiffness in the back and neck, muscle pain, often severe and paralysis.
Symptoms usually start about three to 35 days after catching polio.
