New boat for patrolling for Nukuleka

The People’s Representative of Tongatapu 10 and Minister of Finance – Dr Pohiva Tui’onetoa, last Friday launched a new boat for patrolling the waters along the Nukuleka coast.
The assistance was worth about TOP$30,000 pa’anga funded by Ministry of MEIDECC.
Nukuleka is under the Lapaha District, and the district officer for Lapaha – Sitiveni Fe’ao says, they requested an assistance for a boat to be used in patrolling and safeguarding the Special Management Areas in Nukuleka.
The reason for this being that these waters were prone to overfishing especially with other fishing boats from around Tonga, coming to this area to fish.
Fe’ao says Nukuleka is known for its abundant marine resources and hence, the need to protect its coastal areas from being overfished.
This new boat is about 16feet long and can hold up to 8 people at one time.
However, at the moment, the boat has not been used for its patrolling purposes as the crew who will be tasked with operating the boat are still undertaking skills training.
Nukuleka is a coastal village with most, if not all, families making a living from the ocean. There are more than 80 fishermen in this village.
