Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 26/11/2018

Staff, students, and ex-students of Tonga College are busily preparing for this weekend’s celebration of the colleges 136th anniversary.

Their Majesties King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau’u will take part in the celebrations, for the opening of a new multipurpose hall that the ex-students have built for the college.

In an interview with the Vice President of the Tonga College Ex-Students Association – Taimifolau says the cost for the construction and furnishing of the new hall is estimated at 2 million pa’anga, which was raised through various fundraising activities held by the ex-students here in Tonga and abroad, particularly in the United States.

Taimifolau expressed his and the ex-students gratitude to all those who gave, saying they witnessed the giving nature of the Tongan people during their fundraisers, as everywhere they went, they were met with open hearts and the people were eager to give, especially to a cause such as the development of a school, which has now come to fruition with this new multi-purpose hall.

This new hall, according to Taimifolau, can comfortably house a crowd of 1,500 and the upper floor of the hall will become a library for the school. All the equipment and furniture for the hall and library is also provided by the ex-students.

Taimifolau says they were motivated to build this hall for the students, as in recent years the school has had to hold assembly in an amphitheater, through rain and cold weather, so the ex-students decided building a hall would be extremely beneficial to the student’s wellbeing, and ultimately their studies.

This afternoon the ex-students together with the current students of Tonga College will be making a traditional presentation to His Majesty King Tupou VI at the Royal Palace in Nuku’alofa.

The 4-day celebration of the 136th anniversary will kick off this Friday with the President of the Ex-Students Association – HSH Prince Tungi as guest of honor at the ex-student’s annual general meeting, together with a traditional presentation and commemoration program that Taimifolau added will also be raising funds for future projects of the ex-students committee for the development of the school.

His Majesty King Tupou VI – the patron of the ex-students Association, will officially open the new multipurpose hall on Saturday, followed by the celebratory service led by the President of the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga – Rev Dr. ‘Ahio.

On Sunday will be a combined prayer service held at the school led by ex-students from the US Chapter with HRH Princess Salote Pilolevu Tuita as guest of honor.

The celebrations will then conclude on Monday with a farewell program for the ex-students from abroad, where the guest of honor will be Hon. Salote Maumautaimi Tuku’aho.

At the moment, the ex-students and the school are making their final preparations for the celebrations and finishing touches for the hall are being made, but Taimifolau was confident, everything would be completed by the end of the week before the celebrations begin, and he was optimistic they would all enjoy a blissful and blessed 136th anniversary celebration.
