The Ministry of Agriculture is hoping for closer collaboration with the public while certifying food from Tonga to be accepted in New Zealand.
CEO of Agriculture says, since they started to verify and certify the food from Tonga to be accepted in New Zealand about two weeks ago, they have encountered multiple challenges such as passengers packing sharp object in the box labelled as food only, other items were also identified such as a bottle of Tongan oil packed with the food items.
Dr. Viliami Manu says, as Tonga is trying to gain New Zealand’s trust on issuing the final pass for the Tongan food imported to New Zealand with the passengers, collaboration is needed to ensure these incidents do not happen in the future and if passengers want to travel with items from Tonga they can simply declare it upon arrival.
In the previous months, the Minister of Agriculture signed a MOU with the head of the Biosecurity of New Zealand for the quarantine certification of foods that passengers from Tonga take to New Zealand.
