Kanitesi Mahe inaugurated as Lord Niukapu

The people of Fangale’ounga in Tongatapu, yesterday celebrated the inauguration of Kanitesi Mahe to the hereditary title, Lord Niukapu, the estate holder of Fangale’ounga.

His Majesty King Tupou VI, according to the laws and constitution of Tonga, bestowed the hereditary title of Lord Niukapu and it’s estate of Fangale’ounga to Kanitesi Mahe

This was the statement in the letter of inauguration from HM delivered by the Lord Chamberlain – Viela Tupou to Kanitesi Mahe yesterday.

Lord Niukapu accepted the letter, and speaking on his behalf, talking chief Maeapala’ivai responded to the Lord Chamberlain. Maeapala’ivai highlighted the significance of this inauguration as the newly inaugurated Lord Niukapu was a direct descendant from the first Lord Niukapu.

The title of Lord Niukapu is now bestowed upon Kanitesi Mahe, aged 60, effective from the 30th of November 2017, following the death of the previous Lord Niukapu who was a relative of Kanitesi Mahe, last year.

Also present at the inauguration was Lord Nuku, who along with Lord Niukapu are the two nobles of the Latuhifo clan.

Many of Lord Niukapus relatives from Fangale’ounga and family also celebrated yesterdays auspicious occasion.

The traditional inauguration of the title will take place at a later date, yet to be confirmed.
