An eleven-year-old Tongan girl living in the United States has become the first Tongan to appear in the popular musical about an orphan girl – Annie. Visesia Fakatoufifita, initially landed the part of Annie in the 5th Avenue Musical Theatre’s Annie production at the end of last year.
Visesia Fakatoufifitas dream of performing in the show began when she watched the Little Mermaid in 2016, which starred Japanese-American actress Diana Huey, who was playing Ariel.
In an interview with Puyallip Herald News, Fakatoufifita said she was inspired by the actress Huey who has the same brown skin color as her and she has wanted to be on stage since.
Her dream came true when she received a letter from the theatre confirming she had been selected from over 500 girls all over America, to play the lead role.
After making through a lengthy and vigorous audition process Visesia has definitely proved her talents in this role.
Landing this role, getting to play on the stage is allowing Annie to inspire other Tongans and islanders with aspiring dreams of performing in musical theatre, with many having shared Annies story multiple times on social media.
