Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 15/01/2019
Abandoned homes and damaged roads are a major concern for the people of Neiafu Vava’u.
The town officer – Vava Lapota says the village holds a village inspection every three months with the aim to keep the village clean and green and attract the tourists.
However with villagers migrating abroad, there has been an increase in houses being abandoned in the village. Lapota says the number of abandoned homes in the village are now more than 20. They are trying to contact the owners for financial assistance in their cleaning campaign, since they are unable to care for their homes.
Lapota also raised concerns about the standard of the roads in the village as many had been badly damaged due to the heavy rain in the past few days. He says about 10 roads were flooded and the main need at the moment is road maintenance to fix this as soon as possible.
According to the latest census, there are more than 700 households in Neiafu with close to 4000 residents.
