Relocation of students worries parents over children’s safety
Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 06/02/2019
Parents have raised their concerns about the safety of their children following the relocation of students and teachers at GPS Vaini.
Some students and teachers were relocated to Lotolu, Longoteme and Malapo while some remain at the school.
The relocation started last year and is continuing this school term until the new classrooms are built.
The Chairman of the PTA – Tevita Cocker says most of the parents are concerned about their children’s safety for they go to schools far away outside their village.
Cocker says due to these concerns PTA members are present every morning at the school to ensure the children’s departure from GPS Vaini are safe and they are also there in the afternoon to welcome them home.
Students are transported to each designated school by a school bus funded by the Government.
The relocation is due to the damaged classrooms inflicted by TC Gita and classes were held in temporary shelters which were also deteriorating and unsafe to house students.
