The office of the Australian High Commissioner to Tonga donated assistance to 5 women who successfully completed a training program of the Tonga National Centre for Women and Children.
The program is a pilot program funded by the Australian government through the Pacific Women Shaping Pacific Development program.
The counsel advisor and co-ordinator from the center, Rev Lola Koloamatangi says, there were 10 women who started off in this pilot program but towards the end, only 5 were able to successfully complete the program.
4 out of the 5 women were interested in sowing where sewing machine and other sowing materials were given them to assist with their sowing.
The other one was interested in cooking and has already started a family business of selling roti and was therefore given a new stove, and other food products to assist with her business.
Koloamatangi says, these assistances were provided with the aim to help them with their daily work and that it could also earn them a good source of income for their families.
Meanwhile, ‘Amelia To’ia and Mele Hau expressed how happy they were over the assistance as it will help them develop their sowing talents.
The program will continue to follow these women in monitoring and mentoring each of their businesses.
