UPU Director General visits Tonga

The Universal Postal Union (UPU) International Bureau’s Director General, Mr. Bishar Abdirahman Hussein is currently in Nuku’alofa in an official visit from February 28th-March 2nd.
The UPU is the United Nations specialized agency that is responsible for international postal service.
While in Nukualofa the Director General will hold courtesy calls to the Hon. Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister of Public Enterprises, ICT Shared Board of Directors and Senior Government and Postal Officials.
In a press conference this morning – Mr. Bishar Abdirahman Hussein said, this visit is critical as the postal sector worldwide has seen a huge decline in traditional letter mail, and there is a strong need for the postal sector in Tonga and the Pacific to take advantage of the emerging technologies and the e-commerce sales that is driving the global economy.
Mr Hussein has held the position of Director General for UPU since October 2012 and he is currently in his second term. In his time as Director General for UPU, Mr Hussein and his team have made tremendous progress in achieving all the milestones of the Doha Postal Strategy.
Mr Hussein will initially visit Samoa as part of inaugurating the third Operational Readiness for E-commerce workshop, where he will also have a chance to hold meetings with the Chief Executive Officers of postal operators from around the Pacific, including Tonga Post Ltd.
