Heavy rainfall poses concern for water borne diseases
Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 05/03/2019
The Supervising Public Health inspector Sela Fa’u is pleading with parents to ensure their children do not play in the swampy areas for they will easily contract water borne disease.
Tonga is currently experiencing heavy rain since last week.
Fa’u says at this stage the children are vulnerable to communicable diseases such as typhoid, diarrhea and they can easily get tapeworms causing other diseases.
The concern is that some flooded areas collect waste from leaking septic tanks and more risks are posed on the lives of children as parents are not cautious or aware of the situation.
Parents are therefore urged to ensure that children wear gumboots during the rainy days and take precautionary measures at all times.
Tonga has been experiencing heavy rain since last month.
