Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 06/03/2019

Today is celebrated worldwide in the Christian faith as Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lent Season leading up to Easter Sunday.

Many churches here in Tonga also participated in special rituals to mark the day. The former Superintendent of the Free Wesleyan Church in Ha’apai – Rev. Dr. Mohenoa Puloka says with the season of Lent beginning today, it is a reminder of the suffering of Christ for our sins.

He emphasized the importance of today’s message – to repent and turn from sin.

The Vicar General of the Roman Catholic Church – Monsignor Lutoviko Finau said Ash Wednesday is a very important day for the church, with the Pope encouraging the church and Christians worldwide to remember the meaning behind this day and it’s message.

Monsignor Finau highlighted three themes of this day which are prayer, fasting, and repentance.

Ash Wednesday begins the count of 40 days (not including Saturday and Sunday) of Lent and will conclude on Easter Sunday.
