PIFS to work with government to address drugs

A team from the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat is currently in Nuku’alofa to conduct consultation with related stakeholders in addressing the national issue of drugs – methamphetamine in particular.
During a press conference this afternoon – Alfred Soakai of the secretariat said, they received a request from the government to assist them in trying to tackle this issue.
While in Nuku’alofa they will conduct consultations with related stakeholders including the Ministries of Police, Justice, prison, health, Foreign Affairs, Customs, Church Leaders, youth groups and Civil society organisations.
After the consultations they will draft a national policy for Tonga on methamphetamine and report back to Government suggesting a way forward for Tonga.
The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat is based in Fiji, and one of their roles is to support and assist the 18 member countries in the forum in challenges they face – in policy areas.
