King orders ombudsman to investigate issues from petitions

His Majesty King Tupou VI has ordered the Ombudsman to investigate and take actions on the three petitions criticizing Government.
His Majesty’s decision in Privy council was delivered by The Lord Privy Seal in a media release.
The decision was to refer the petitions to the Ombudsman as a matter of urgency, conduct such investigations and actions as he considers appropriate and make a determination on any instance of mal-administration which he finds have been established to his satisfaction and report to His Majesty.
His Majesty in Privy council directed that Government urgently provide adequate funding for the anti-corruption commission to be effective from 1st July 2019.
Inclusive in this matter is remuneration for the Commissioner at a Judicial Level salary to be approved by His Majesty.
It was also directed that the petitions be referred to the Attorney General, the Director of Public Prosecution and the Commissioner of Police for Investigation.
After this, any breaches of the criminal law will be prosecuted, where prima facie (prima fei-see) case is established. Moreover, civil litigation as considered appropriate to uphold the integrity of the constitution and laws of Tonga and to Advise His Majesty, from time to time, on progress therewith.
