Work & Labour Force Statistics workshop to improve labour standards

A 5-day workshop co-hosted by Tonga Statistics Department on “Work and Labour Force Statistics” is currently held in Nuku’alofa in partnership with the Labour Division of the Ministry of Trade and Economic Development under the National Strategy for Development of Statistics. The workshop is made possible through collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC).
Attending the workshop are 30 officials from Tonga and the Cook Islands from these ministries and other ministries that deals with collecting similar information including Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chamber Commerce.
An employment specialist from the International Labour Organization, Phu Hyunh says, the objective of the workshop is to enhance the capacity of Tonga and the Cook Islands to prepare, conduct, and analyze labour force survey data, and contribute to updating information on both countries’ labour markets based on international standards.
Hyunh hopes that by the end of the workshop, participants will improve their knowledge on how Labour Force Statistics contributes to provide needed indicators for monitoring of the Tonga Strategic Development Framework and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) decent work-related targets.
The workshop will end on Friday.
