The Ministry of Agriculture, Foods, and Forestry have implemented a new program for the livestock and food sector, aimed at improving the quality of local meat especially for the public’s consumption. This is a program the ministry is working on with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization – FAO.
In an interview with Taia Lehaa from the Ministry, he says this program uses a technique known as artificial insemination or AI, to breed superior cattle and sheep that would have better quality meat for consumption.
Lehaa says this program has yielded successful results in the first part of the program and also pointed out that this is not the first time for this program to be held in Tonga as a similar program was funded by China but that was only for pigs.
Tonga imports a lot of meat for consumption and this has raised health concerns particularly with a growing number of the population suffering from Non-communicable diseases. The ministry are hopeful that this program will continue successfully in future resulting in improving local meat quality and minimizing the import of meat from abroad.
