More than half of young children in Tonga overweight and obese
Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 17/04/2019
More than half of young children in Tonga aged 13-15 years old are found to be overweight and obese, according to a survey carried out by the Ministry of Health in previous years.
The Ministry therefore is urging eating healthy and balanced foods between young children to ensure these statistics will decrease in the future.
The Acting CEO of the Ministry of Education – Dr Raelyn Esau says, they are launching a healthy eating campaign this afternoon for students of GPS Nuku’alofa aiming to help young children reduce the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and sugary foods as it is understood many lives have been lost due to NCDs.
A survey carried out by the Ministry of Health shows the rise in number of overweight and obese young children in Tonga and therefore it is important to ensure young children make the right choices of food as they are the future of the country.
The campaign hopes parents will work together to prepare healthier foods for their children.
The campaign is being launched with the theme – “Eat Healthy – Sugar Enough!”
The campaign will run for 6 weeks.
