School quiz kicks off preparations for Environment Week 2019

The Environment Department of the Ministry of MEIDECC have begun preparations for the Environment Week which will take place next month.

Today the Department begins a secondary schools quiz with eight high schools in Tongatapu, focused on the environment.

The secondary schools quiz competition on environment will take place once weekly, beginning this afternoon until the Environment Week on the 2nd – 8th of June.

The Acting Director of Environment – Siosiua Latu says this quiz is aimed at raising awareness on the importance of the environment among the school children, who are the future of this country.

Latu says they worked closely together with the Ministry of Education in organizing this quiz tailoring the questions according to the students’ curriculum.

This year’s Environment Week is themed – Beat Pollution in which Latu says they have several programs planned for the week to continue raising awareness on the environment including school visits, clean up competitions, as well as an open day exhibition.

They will also complete the secondary schools quiz competition for Environment week where they will award the winning prizes.

The quiz competition kicks off this afternoon with Tonga High School versus ‘Apifo’ou College followed by Queen Salote versus Takuilau College. This will be broadcast on Television Tonga tomorrow evening. The quiz competition will continue on Thursday next week.
