The CEO and staff of Tonga Ports Authority celebrated the commission of Tonga’s second tugboat MV Olovaha this morning at the Taufa’ahau Tupou IV Wharf despite the bad weather.
Gracing the event were Their Majesties King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau’u along with the Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers and diplomatic corps.
CEO says the second tugboat was identified as a requirement from the cruise liners visiting Tonga, as more cruise ships are docking at the Vuna Wharf and the Puatalefusi Harbor.
Mosese Lavemai says earlier this year the biggest cruise liner to visit Tonga was the Celebrity Solstice and they requested two tugboats, however at the time Ports Authority were still finalizing paper work for the MV Olovaha to be bought from Australia.
With the second tugboat in place, Lavemai says it will help with ensuring that towing and harboring of vessels will be safer now.
