The government’s reconstruction project following damages from TC Gita is expected to commence next month with financial assistance from the World Bank.
CEO of MEIDECC Paula Ma’u says they are currently completing paper work with hope, by next month the construction project commences, in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Education.
The process includes ensuring the project in in line with the requirements from the donor partner and the guidelines for construction projects.
Earlier this week, senior officer from Tonga Red Cross Society raised her concern for the students’ safety as many are still using the damaged classrooms and tents.
Tiulipe Peleketi says there’s hope the Government would speed up with their construction project as the students are not safe due to the standard of the classrooms.
“It’s over a year now since Gita made landfall and some schools are still using the tents and it’s a pity”
A total of 109 out of 150 schools with an estimated 23, 000 students at all levels of education were affected.
Government donated financial assistance to the Non-Government schools with about 3.4 million pa’anga after severe damage from Gita last year.
