Phase IV Tuku Ifi Leva launched on World No Tobacco Day

The Speaker of Parliament – Lord Fakafanua this morning launched Phase 4 of the Tuku Ifi Leva Anti-Smoking Campaign in marking World No Tobacco Day today – May 31st.
The Tuku Ifi Leva campaign is delivered as part of the Tonga National Strategy to Prevent and Control Non-Communicable Disease 2015-2020. The National NCD Strategy is based on the best practice principles for tobacco control outlined in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
Lord Fakafanua emphasized 4 W’s – what, who, when, and why – to better understand issues around this topic.
The WHO Liaison to Tonga – Dr. Yutaro Setoya emphasized this year’s theme “Don’t let Tobacco take your breath away” and reflected on his personal experience with smoking.
The Tuku Ifi Leva campaign is with the Health Promotion Unit under the Ministry of Healths Public Health Division and the Medical Officer in Charge – Dr. ‘Ofa Tukia says they have already seen successful results from phases 1-3 but they still face obstacles that they are looking to overcome in the final phases of the campaign.
