Cultural Week highlight school students’ poetry skills

Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 19/06/2019

Hundreds of primary and secondary school students in Tongatapu were at the Queen Salote Memorial Hall this morning for the Cultural Week’s poem competition hosted by the Ministry of Tourism.

The head of the Cultural Division Pulupaki Ika says, this morning’s program is to empower young people talented with poetry composition to preserve the traditional way of writing poems using metaphors and similes.

This morning’s competition was in two categories for primary and secondary school students.

Pulupaki hopes that with this program, the ancient method of poetry composition could be taught to the younger generations as Tongan poems is one of Tonga’s golden treasures and it is only understood and valued by Tongan people and poets.

The program will continue with a multi-cultural performance tonight.
