HRH Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala last week received the new Guardian Class Patrol boat, the Voea Ngahau Koula or Golden Arrow from the Government of Australia for His Majesty Armed Forces(HMAF).
The Ngahau Koula is the first of two new patrol boats gifted to HMAF under Australia’s Pacific Maritime Security program which aims to enhance practical maritime security cooperation across the South Pacific Tonga included.
The Ngahau Koula is a replacement of HMAF Voea Savea which departed Masefield Navy base to Australia in April and underwent training on the new vessel before sailing its maiden voyage back to Tonga in August.
Tonga will receive the second replacement GPB patrol boat in late 2020.
The Pacific Maritime Security Program is Australia’s 2 billion step up to the region, with an emphasis on a new era of partnership with countries like Tonga.
